Although the 2021 Miss USA Pageant won't be held until November 29th, one of the contestants has already made history for her participation in the annual event.
Kataluna Enriquez, who over the weekend was named Miss Nevada USA, will be the first "proud transgender woman of color" to compete for the coveted crown. "My win is our win," says the 27-year-old in an Instagram message to the LGBTQ community. "We just made history. Happy Pride.”
While Enriquez will be the "first transgender woman of color" to compete in the pageant, she won't be the first transgender participant. That title goes to Spain's Angela Ponce, who represented her country in the 2018 pageant.
While this is an important step for the LGBTQ community, will it still be a few years before a transgender contestant wins the Miss USA Pageant?
