Renowned daredevil Alex Harvill is dead after a failed attempt at breaking the record for the world's longest motorcycle jump, authorities say. He was only 28 years old.
The tragic incident happened Thursday at the Moses Lake Airshow in Washington state. Harvill was attempting a 351-foot jump over a number of parked vehicles when he touched down just short of the landing ramp, crashing into a dirt mound, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office. The impact caused the stuntman to fly over the handlebars and bounce around for dozens of feet before finally coming to a stop. He died from his injuries a short time later, sheriff's officials say.
Harvill's exact cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy, which is scheduled to be performed on Friday, per the sheriff's office.
Is it foolish to attempt stunts like this? Are the days when daredevils like Evil Knievel became huge stars behind us?
