Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has delivered a message to his state's unemployed residents: Either start looking for a job, or you'll stop receiving unemployment benefits.
Effective June 1st, residents receiving unemployment benefits will be required to provide the state with proof that they've been pounding the pavement in search of new jobs. Although Florida has maintained the policy in the past, DeSantis suspended the requirement early last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Normally when you’re getting unemployment, the whole idea is that’s temporary, and you need to be looking for work to be able to get off unemployment,” DeSantis says. "It was a disaster, so we suspended those job search requirements. I think it’s pretty clear now -- we have an abundance of job openings.”
Is that a fair requirement? Do most people see unemployed periods as vacations?
