Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has signed a bill that legalizes possession of marijuana, making the state the first in the south to allow its recreational use.
The bill signed Wednesday allows anyone in the state 21 or older to possess up to one ounce of marijuana beginning July 1.
Last week, New Mexico's governor signed legislation that makes recreational marijuana use legal for adults 21 and older as well. The bill also allows for minor cannabis offenses to be expunged from criminal records.
