A 20-year-old college gymnast has died after a taking a fall while practicing on the uneven bars.
Melanie Coleman, an All-American gymnast attending Southern Connecticut State University, was practicing on Friday when her hand slipped off one of the bars and she fell, suffering a spinal injury, Coleman's former coach, Thomas Alberti, says. She was rushed to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injury on Sunday, her family says.
Coleman, who was studying to become a nurse, was an inspiration to the other members of her gymnastic team, Alberti says. "They all looked up to her, they wanted to be with her," he says. "They loved when she was teaching them."
