A tourist who wanted a closer look at Hawaii's Kilauea volcano got closer than he expected when he fell into it.
The incident occurred Wednesday after the unidentified man climbed over a metal railing at the Streaming Bluff overlook, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park officials say. After losing his footing, the man fell from the cliff -- and landed on a ledge 70 feet below. Rescue workers were called and, believe it or not, they found the man severely injured but alive. Using a rope attached to a helicopter, they were able to airlift the man out of the volcano and rush him to a nearby hospital. His condition is unknown.
"Visitors should never cross safety barriers, especially around dangerous and destabilized cliff edges," Ranger John Broward says. "Crossing safety barriers and entering closed areas can result in serious injuries and death."
