Halima Aden may not be the first Muslim to model for Sports Illustrated, but she is the first Muslim model to wear a hijab and burkini for the magazine.
Aden is a Somali-American who was born at a refugee camp in Kenya. She lied there as a young girl until she was seven.
"I keep thinking [back] to six-year-old me who, in this same country, was in a refugee camp," said Aden. "So to grow up to live the American dream [and] to come back to Kenya and shoot for SI in the most beautiful parts of Kenya–I don’t think that’s a story that anybody could make up."
"Whether you feel your most beautiful and confident in a burkini or a bikini, YOU ARE WORTHY," said SI Swimsuit editor MJ Day.
What do you think of an SI model wearing a hijab and burkini for the magazine? What are other ways that the magazine can diversify its swimsuit issue?
