An investigation into a Florida jail reveals that guards had been hitting up an inmate for financial advice, in exchange for amenities like Chinese food or internet access.
Investigators say inmate Robert Potchen befriended several guards, offering legal advice on things like taxes and mortgages. In exchange, guards allowed Potchen to order Chinese takeout, use the internet, and even vape inside his jail cell.
He also allegedly had a romantic relationship with a female guard and told her he would transfer $300,000 into her bank account.
Potchen is serving a 15-year prison sentence for threatening his wife with a gun during an argument. The five guards implicated in the probe have since resigned or retired.
Are you surprised to hear something like this happening for real? Should prisons have stricter rules for inmates, or is being locked up punishment enough.
