Producers for Sesame Street are walking back a story from yesterday about Bert and Ernie being written as a gay couple.
On Tuesday, Sesame Workshop tweeted that the two are best friends but "remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation." It then went on to say: "Sesame Street has always stood for inclusion and acceptance."
The tweets were sent in response to comments from an openly gay former writer for Sesame Street. Mark Saltzman told Queerty that his writing for the puppet duo refelected the idea that the two were always lovers.
