Hank Azaria Says He's Willing to 'Step Aside' From Controversial Apu Role

Could the Kwik-E-Mart shutter its doors for good? After Hari Kondabolu’s documentary "The Problem With Apu" claimed that Simpsons character Apu stereotypes Southeast Asians in a negative light, voice actor Hank Azaria is addressing the controversy.

Speaking on Tuesday to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Azaria says he's "perfectly willing and happy to step aside" from doing the voice now that his eyes "have been opened".

Azaria told Colbert that he's saddened by "the idea that anyone young or old, past or present, being bullied based on Apu."

The Simpsons addressed the controversy a few weeks ago, but many called the response "tone deaf".

Is it time for The Simpsons to retire Apu? What about Bee Man? Or Fat Tony? How about Groundskeeper Willie?
