BREAKING: Gunman holds hostages in French market, claims allegiance to ISIS

A gunman, swearing allegiance to the Islamic State, has taken hostages inside a supermarket near the southern city of Carcassonne.

One of the hostages is dead as the gunman has barricaded himself inside the Super U supermarket.

The situation unfolded around 11 AM local time, when a gunman opened fire on a group of local police officers, shooting one in the shoulder.

The gunman then took shelter inside the supermarket in Trebes, reportedly shouting, "Allahu Akbar!".

The French Interior Ministry confirmed on Twitter that police and rescue operations are taking place.
