Hands Across America was a benefit event and publicity campaign staged on Sunday, May 25, 1986 (which makes yesterday its 31st anniversary!) in which approximately 6.5 million people held hands in a human chain for fifteen minutes along a path across the contiguous United States.
I participated in Hands Across America when I was a kid in Philly. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I have no pictures to show that I did it. I do remember My Mom on one side of me and a stranger on the other. He smelled really bad and dressed liked it November. I have no idea why he was dressed that way, but I was 7, so I didn't question it.
Even the hit ABC sitcom, The Goldbergs, did an episode with an homage to the benefit event.
