The Japanese government is asking China to cease performing COVID-19 tests via the anus on Monday, saying that they are receiving many complaints of "psychological distress."

Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato says the Japanese government has filed a request through the Japanese Embassy in Beijing. Kato says the government is urging China to exempt its citizens from such types of tests.

The US has reportedly had some of its citizens subjected to the anal test and has also filed a complaint with China.

Japanese employees working in Beijing had called the Chinese anal swab tests humiliating and that it could be a violation of their human rights and dignity.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters later that China has "adjusted anti-epidemic measures in a scientific manner in accordance with relevant laws and regulations," but it is unclear exactly what that means in regards to the anal swab testing.
