Last month, the Red Hot Chili Peppers rocked the music world by announcing that guitarist John Frusciante had rejoined the band and would accompany the band during a string of festival dates in 2020.
Now, drummer Chad Smith says not only is Frusciante touring with the Peppers, he is currently involved in the band's new album, the follow-up to 2016's The Getaway.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Smith says,
“I was given strict orders for this interview: ‘DON’T TALK ABOUT THE BAND.' But, yes, John is back in the band, and everyone knows that. We’re psyched. The festivals are the only shows booked. For now, we’ll mostly be concentrating on new songs and writing a new record. We’re all real excited to make new music."
The new album will be the first with Frusciante's involvement since 2006's double album Stadium Arcadium. He also played a main role in the creation of the band's most renowned albums including 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik and 1999's Californication.
