The 1975's 'It's Not Living (If It's Not With You)' Is an Ode to Recovery

As the release date of The 1975's third studio album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, creeps closer, the UK-based alt/pop-rockers are keeping fans on their toes by releasing an array of songs off the upcoming record.

After sharing lead single "Give Yourself a Try," politically charged "Love It If We Made It," electro-pop bop "TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME," and jazzy "Sincerity Is Scary," the band revealed the fifth offering from the album, "It's Not Living (If It's Not With You)."

The '80s-tinged track pairs dark lyrics with bright guitar tones, as Matty Healy sings about what sounds like a failed relationship upon first listen. "And all I do is sit and think about you / If I knew what you'd do / Collapse my veins wearing beautiful shoes / It's not living if it's not with you," he laments in the chorus. "All I do is sit and drink without you / If I choose then I lose / Distract my brain from the terrible news / It's not living if it's not with you."

Those that are familiar with the vocalist know he's been struggling with heroin addiction, and though the song's lyrics sound like a break up anthem they're actually about his recovery.

A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships is slated for a November 30th release via Interscope. The 1975 hit the road to support the album on a North American tour in early 2019.
