Smashing Pumpkins have announced that three of the original four members of the band will reunite this summer to celebrate the band's first five albums.
Frontman Billy Corgan made little effort to keep the plan secret over the past month or two, but the tour announcement was still being met with excitement by the fans.
Corgan, co-founding guitarist James Iha and co-founding drummer Jimmy Chamberlain are slated to get back on the road with longtime Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Shroeder (a member since 2007) in the Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour, beginning in July.
Pumpkins announced that the band is moving to a three-guitar lineup "to better emulate the signature tones and textures of their albums.”
The setlist will reportedly pull from the band's first five album, Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Adore and Machina/The Machines of God.
Corgan said in a statement that the "show and staging will be unlike anything we've ever done, and will feature a set unlike any we've ever played. For if this is a chance at a new beginning, we plan on ushering it in with a real bang."
Conspicuously absent from the reunion is co-founding bassist D'Arcy Wretzky. Also absent from the release is clarification on who will handle bass duties on the jaunt, scheduled to begin this summer.
The reclusive Wretzky has attacked Corgan in the past for allegedly lying to her about the reunion and rescinding an offer to reunite with her former band. She also lashed out at Chamberlain for being part of it.
Corgan later responded saying Wretsky has for years refused his overtures to be involved in anything Pumpkins-related.
Corgan, Iha and Chamberlain had reportedly been in the studio with famed producer Rick Rubin in January working on music for a future release, but it doesn't seem like that music will see a release before this fall.
