Joseph On Hair Evolution & Identity | Your Hair Talks. Make A Statement.

As folk/pop band Joseph says, "the first thing people notice about the band is the harmonies and the family aspect." Joseph is comprised of sisters Natalie, Allison, and Meegan, who are originally from Portland, Oregon. But another thing you'll notice about the girls is that they each have different hairstyles.

In a new interview, Joseph opens up about each of their hair stories, explaining how their hair has influenced their identity, how their hair has changed over the years, and more.

Natalie:

"It's so tricky, with curly hair, to figure out how to express it, because every single day is different. The thing that I love about it, I love the spontaneity. I love working with what it is, and then molding with it and embodying whatever it conjures up in me. And there's a sense of, 'Okay, this is who I am.' It's actually ... it's not something I'm putting on. It's naturally occurring. It was like a little bit of a 'I'm gonna stand taller' because of this."

Meegan:

"I think I've learned a lot about myself by pushing the boundaries. I always, my whole life, had very long hair, and I would just always wear it in a ponytail or up in a bun or a side braid. It was a huge part of my identity even though I kept it to myself. It was like the one part of me that made me feel like woman and feminine. As I got into college, I started becoming very trapped by that feeling of like, 'I must cover myself up.' To my roommates, I said, 'I should just like cut off my ponytail and then I'll like have to start the process.' They're like, 'Okay.' So Allie and one of my roommates were like, 'Okay, we have the scissors right here.' They cut my ponytail off. If anyone's ever tried to grow out a pixie cut, holy cow. My style in Joseph, it's much more experimental. It probably doesn't look experimental, but for me, I'm like, 'Oh, Oh my ... what is this? What is this thing?' So, it's fun for me to go, 'Oh, I can be this like Joseph version of myself,' and try things I wouldn't try in my normal day."

Allison:

"My sister-in-law actually chopped my bangs off, and she cut them long at first, and I looked like I had gone back in time to like my 19, 20 year-old self. And I had a second with myself in the mirror like, 'Whoa, I see you. You were a weird version of me, and thank you. And now, let's get rid of that.' And like then just chopped them shorter, and I was like, 'This rules.'"
