A 47-year-old man is in custody after a fiery pursuit involving a stolen U-Haul rental truck in Orange County, California this morning.
When asked by news crews if he had anything to say following his arrest, the suspect replied, "Good morning, L.A."
He had just lead cops on a two-hour pursuit from Orange County to Los Angeles, and then back after the truck was allegedly stolen from a business in Irvine.
News helicopters caught up with the chase involving a model of the largest truck that U-Haul offers to the public for rent. The truck was seen speeding "at about 60 or 70 mph" on the 605 Freeway in Whittier a little after 5am local time. A trailer attached to the back of the truck was also seen sparking.
The truck appeared to hit a spike strip at around 6:15am local time on the 91 and then exited the freeway with two flat front tires. Then the tires began to smoke as the driver continued on at about 10 mph. He even appeared to be using a cell phone at one point.
At around 6:45am, the front passenger side wheel area caught on fire and then started to spread.
Finally, the driver stopped after it appeared the cabin was starting to fill with smoke. The man is seen jumping over fences to try and escape the cops. He also appeared to have a bag with him that he was throwing over the fences and picked up as he fled.
Finally, the man surrendered to authorities.
When the man was placed in the patrol car, a police spokesperson says he laughed.
"He's not a young teenage kid anymore. He's 47 years old. He should know what the consequences are. For them to laugh as you're taking them away. It's almost like they feel like it's a slap on the wrist."
