A large engraved penis estimated to be 2,000 years old and created by the Romans was uncovered in England during a highway upgrade project.
An archaeological team working on the site uncovered the ancient stone, and after further examination, determined that there was indeed a penis intentionally carved on it.
"The phallus was seen as an important image of strength and virility in the Roman world," says Steve Sherlock, an Archaeology Lead for Highway England. He adds that Roman warriors used to wear good-luck charms with penises on them when entering a battle.
The road upgrade project has uncovered a number of ancient relics during the course of the four-year project. Other discoveries included items from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and medieval ages.
