As traffic in Maryland is expected to increase substantially in the coming years, it seems that the Bay Bridge will no longer cut it as the only option connecting the state's Eastern Shore to the other side of the Chesapeake Bay.
Delegate Robin Grammer shared to Facebook the Maryland Transportation Authority/Federal Highway Administration's map of potential locations for a new Bay Bridge. There are fourteen possible locations being considered in this early part of the planning process. A bridge as far north as to connect Aberdeen to Cecil County and a bridge as far south as to connect Lexington Park and Princess Anne County are being considered.
The current Bay Bridge connects Annapolis to Kent Island and Queenstown. For years the bridge has been the only main link connecting the two shores and is therefore subject to heavy traffic for commuters and summer vacationers.
The Bay Bridge was initially opened in 1952 with one span, with the second span being added in 1973. In 2005, a study was conducted to assess the possibility of adding a new Chesapeake Bay crossing, but no final decision was made as to where the new bridge would be built.
