We’re looking back to what happened On This Day in Music for June 9th, and usually we have the birthdays at the end but I want to start with one today.

On June 9th, 1915, a man named Les Paul was born. During his life Les was an accomplished musician, he was very experimental in the recording studio, but his most important accomplishment was being a pioneer with electric guitars.

Les tried various techniques to make his acoustic sound bigger and eventually came up with a design for the first solid body electric guitar. The first one was crude, but over time it was refined and sold through Gibson. Years later Les Paul Guitars continue to be one of the most played in music by Dave Grohl, Eric Clapton, Slash, Pete Townshend, James Hetfield and Billie Joe Armstrong, just to name a few. Check out Billie Joe talking about his own Les Paul model that is for sale.

And let’s watch him playing “American Idiot” with Green Day on Letterman in 2004.

We shall move to June 9th, 1998, and discuss the world of fisticuffs. Today, Liam Gallagher got in a brawl at the bar  of the Metropolitan Hotel in London with Mick Hucknall of Simply Red. Liam had no problem calling Mick out over an interview where he said that Oasis was an embarrassment to Manchester musicians. The fight happened and security stopped it, but Liam eventually went back into the bar and was trying to cause more trouble.

For a rock star move like this, I think “Rock n Roll Star” is needed. Live at home in Manchester in 2005.

June 9th, 2003 was a good day for Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. He was in the hospital for stomach pains and it was a pretty intense situation. The doctors held him in there for almost 2 weeks and said it was an intestinal disorder or a parasite that had caused the problems. Thankfully everything worked out for Chester and he got to leave the Los Angeles hospital today.

Linkin Park took a few weeks off and hit the road for the Summer Sanitarium Tour with Metallica and Limp Bizkit. Watch, from their Live in Texas video, “Numb”.

We talked about Les Paul’s birthday earlier, I think we have a few more though for June 9th.

This was the day, in 1978, that Matt Bellamy was born. Matt is the man who sings / plays the guitar / writes songs for Muse and does quite a good job with it! At Wembley Stadium in 2007, they played “Knights of Cydonia” (which seeing live alone is worth the price of a Muse ticket)!

One more Englishman has a birthday today, and that is Ed Simons, half of The Chemical Brothers. They’ve been making EDM since 1989 and had a great time playing “The Golden Path” with The Flaming Lips at the2003 MTV EMA show!

We can squeeze in one more birthday, and it’s Dean Dinning’s Happy Happy! Dean came to us on June 9th, 1967 and his life lead him to becoming the bass player for Toad the Wet Sprocket. Let’s watch “Good Intentions” from the Key Club in Hollywood from 2011.

Take all this fine information and tell everyone you know about it! You may get a free cup of coffee or something with it. Happy June 9th!
