On This Day in Music...June 4th

Posted June 4th, 2014 @ 1:30am

You could look at June 4th one of two ways. We could say there's a full month until we get some time off work for Independence Day. But don't be pessimistic, look at the good things as we talk about what happened On This Day in Music!

We'll begin in 1993 in Seattle with the love saga of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. An incident had the cops arrive on the scene and arrest Kurt for hitting Courtney. They were playing music loudly and the police were called. When they came, Courtney threw a glass of juice into his face and a pushing match ensued. The police immediately cuffed Kurt and took him in, plus confiscated 3 guns from the residence.

Since Kurt was away from his casa, how about "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"

By the way, he was out of jail in 3 hours. Not the worst he could have done...

Let's go to June 4th, 1967, as The Jimi Hendrix Experience played their last show in England at the Saville Theatre in London. This performance was special because The Beatles were there and Jimi decided to play "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" once he found out they were in the audience.

Jimi and the band rehearsed that once a few minutes before showtime! That's confidence in yourself and being a rockstar!

What about another Beatles tribute for today? Let's jump up to June 4th, 1994 and the MTV Movie Awards. The film Backbeat was a look at the Beatles early days and to do the music for the film, an all-star band was assembled. That band played together today at the award show!

The Backbeat band was Mike Mills of REM, Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs, Don Fleming of Gumball and Dave Grohl (making his first appearance on a stage since Kurt Cobain's death)! That is quite a lineup!

They played "Money" and "Long Tall Sally" that night!

And now we go to BIRTHDAYS!

Stefan Lessard is our first one today, the man who plays the bass for Dave Matthews Band! He's 39 now and started with them when he was 16. Stefan used to sneak on and off stage in the early days because he was too young to be in some of the bars they played!

From The Central Park Concert, watch Stefan kick off "Crush" in front of all those people, smooth as silk in 2003.

I would have been a bit nervous there. That's why Stefan is a professional.

One more birthday to wrap up today and this happened on June 4th, 1990, as Zac Farro was born! We know Zac from his time as the drummer for Paramore. Now he's launching a new band, Half Noise.

Watch them playing "Ignorance" at the Myspace Secret Show in Munchen, Germany in 2009.

Whew! Quite a June 4th! Enjoy your day amigo!
