On This Day in Music...June 11th

Halfway through the week, thank the sweet Lord! Let's check out what happened On This Day in Music for June 11th and get you closer to the weekend.

Today was apparently the day to go to jail and we'll start in 1977. Joe Strummer and Topper Headon of The Clash didn't appear in court so they were arrested and held overnight at the jail in Newcastle upon Tyne. What were the original charges? Stealing a pillowcase from a Holiday Inn!

Live in Paris in 1980, "I Fought The Law"!

Remember kids, don't mess with Holiday Inn. They'll get what's theirs!

Another musical jail story to talk about happened on June 11th, 2004, as Courtney Love turned herself in to LA police on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. A few weeks before, Courtney allegedly came after a woman at her ex-boyfriend's house in Los Angeles. Her weapons, by the way, were a bottle and a torch! Where does one get a torch from?!

An LA based story deserves "Malibu", live on Later With Jools Holland from 1998!

Back we go to June 11, 1988 at Wembley Stadium in London. It was Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday and to celebrate the occasion, it was one of the biggest parties the world had ever seen! Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, Sting, UB40, Eurythmics, Stevie Wonder, Dire Straits and more performed to a worldwide audience of over a billion people!

Watch a cool version of "Summertime Blues" from Simple Minds with Johnny Marr playing his six string!

Besides shows and arrests, birthdays occur on June 11th as well!

We kick off the celebrations with Robert Birch, born today in 1961. Robert's name might not be familiar but you know his group, Stereo MCs! "Connected" comes from BBC2's Live Floor Show in 2003!

The next man on our birthday list is the guy on the kit for ZZ Top, Mr. Frank Beard! He came to us on June 11th, 1949, and is still rocking and rolling just as strong as ever!

"Gimme All Your Lovin'" is from VH1's Rock Honors in 2007!

One more birthday! One more birthday! Dan Lavery is our man who was born June 11th, 1969, and he grew up to be the singer for Tonic!

Watch their acoustic performance of "Open Up Your Eyes" from a music shop in Seattle in 2010!

Now you go out there and conquer the world cowboy / cowgirl! Happy June 11!
