It's August 1st, meaning that we're starting a new month and that much closer to Labor Day Weekend getaways (not that I'm counting the days or anything)!
Let's kick off the happenings On This Day in Music with August 1st, 1981. A new channel signed on the air, giving us 24/7 access to music videos, news and concerts! MTV came to us today and signed on with "Video Killed The Radio Star" from The Buggles!
It's too bad that now it's a mess of horrid reality television and programs about being a pregnant teenager.
On we go to August 1st, 2006. A fan died after being at Korn's Family Values Tour in Atlanta on July 30th. Andy Richardson was beaten up after going into the moshpit during The Deftone's set. He passed away on this day at Grady Memorial Hospital. The assailant did plead guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in jail and 10 years probation.
This Deftones performance of "Change (In The House of Flies)" is from 2006 at the Columbus, Ohio Family Values show.
We're moving on to August 1st, 1980 in New York City. It was a historic day for Def Leppard, as they played their first show in the United States as they opened for AC/DC! What better way to celebrate than with "Hello America"!
And not only was it Def Leppard's first US concert today, it's also the birthday of their frontman Joe Elliot! He was born August 1st, 1959! That's a pretty awesome way to say happy birthday, getting your first shot in the States!
Let's continue with the Happy Happy fiesta!
August 1st, 1942 is the next person we'll celebrate with, the leader of The Grateful Dead, Mr. Jerry Garcia! The face of a generation came to us today and this performance is from 1991 in San Francisco. Enjoy "Touch of Grey"!
Last up for the day is Adam Duritz! The Counting Crows singer was born August 1st, 1964 in Baltimore! A great career and quite the hairdo as well! "Rain King" comes from the Counting Crows in Australia, Live At Sydney Opera House!
Now the rest of August has a high standard to live up to after all of that!
