It's the end of the month. You've survived July and we're going to finish the month with some good tales. On This Day in Music, July 31st, let's do it!
First up it was July 31st, 2010 and Switchfoot played a concert. But this wasn't any concert, this was the Centennial Celebration for the Boy Scouts of America! They helped mark 100 years of being prepared and merit badges at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia! Watch "Meant To Live" from the show!
I like that they also broadcast it around the country for Boy Scouts to see everywhere. I won't, however, comment on the awkwardness of air guitar in a Scout uniform. We'll just move on...
Next we go to Jamaica and discuss the doings of July 31st, 1995. The Jamaican government wanted to honor their most famous son, Bob Marley. They decided that a set of commemorative stamps was just the way to do it, so they put them out today! This is a great performance of "Redemption Song" from Jamaica in 1980.
Now we're off to July 31st, 2012 in Rhode Island. Back in 1979 The Who was supposed to play there but cancelled the rest of their tour because of the death of 11 fans at an Ohio show. That brings us up to the present day, where the band announced their Providence show and said they would honor tickets to that 1979 gig for fans that still had them. 10 people kept them and they were allowed them to trade in see the Quadrophenia show they originally paid $11.50 to see back then! Very awesome of the band and the fans to keep their tickets!
This is "Baba O'Reilly" from the show in Providence which eventually happened in February of 2013.
We have end of the month birthdays to talk about as well!
Birthday boy Bill Berry will be our first! REM's drummer came to us on July 31st, 1959. He was behind the kit for many years with them until quitting in 1997. He said it wasn't anything personal when he quit, it was just time to move on.
"What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" comes from Atlanta in 1995!
How about we go from the kit to the wheels of steel? Fatboy Slim was born on July 31st, 1963! I know, there are hundreds of videos of Fatboy on stage doing his thing, but how about "Weapon of Choice". WALKEN!
One more birthday and it's for Coldplay's Will Champion! Not only was he born on July 31st, 1978, but Will also joined Coldplay on July 31st, 1997! Happy birthday indeed sir!
"Viva La Vida" is from Japan on MTV World Stage in 2009!
Good end to the month! Damn good end! Happy July 31st to you!
