Back in March, Tool guitarist Adam Jones made a joke. Jones said, "the record's done and its coming out tomorrow...just kidding." A bunch of people did not catch the "just kidding" part and everybody got excited.
The truth is that a new Tool album is a long way from being completed. The band is writing, but they tell Rolling Stone exactly why they have not released a new album since 2006.
In 2007, a friend of Jones' sued the band. He claimed that he created artwork for the band and wanted credit.
Then, Tool was sued by an insurance company that was initially hired to defend the band against lawsuits.
That was seven years ago and the band is still stuck in litigation with the insurance company. Jones vents to Rolling Stone:
"It's costing millions and millions and millions of dollars to defend us and fans are all going, 'We want a new Tool album. What the fuck?' And you don't want to pull people into your problems, because they don't understand. But, the point is we're fighting the good fight. We're going to trial and we want to crush them...We bought an insurance policy for peace of mind, but instead we would have been better off if we never had it and just dealt with the original lawsuit."
The band is still writing music. They do have one song just about finished. Jones, drummer Danny Carey, and bassist Justin Chancellor all describe the song as "heavy."
