I realize we've done a lot of beers from Stone Brewing the last few months
but there's a reason. A few actually.
1. They are (relatively) new to our area...and they've recently expanded their
reach in the DMV serving more areas and distributing more styles of their beer.
2. They are one of the top rated breweries in the country.
3. This particular beer has an interesting story.
This is a collaboration but, unlike most collabs, this isn't between breweries.
This is between Greg Koch of Stone Brewing, Drew Curtis of Fark.com,
and Wil Wheaton of Star Trek, and now, geekdom fame.
Look-Right off, this beer surprised me. I try not to do any background
on the beers. By going in cold, it forces me to use my palette to pick
out the style and tastes I pick up. My palette is still developing so these type
of exercises help refine it and make me a better beer taster.
At least, that's the hope.
Anyway, I saw "wheat" on the bottle and immediately thought "light" in color.
So imagine my surprise when I saw what came out (photo below). Black with a
brown foamy head.
Smell-I think that's the sweet pecan in my nose along with a bit of booze.
Taste-REALLY boozy first taste. It's not hot though, which I appreciate. Some
nice chocolate taste as well.
Mouth-Full bodied. Second taste brings out a nutty flavor to match the
booze. Viscous throughout...like a coating on my mouth and throat.
Overall-Great balance...I'll start there. For the high ABV (13%) that balance
is world class. I get zero heat from the booze which is amazing considering
the ABV. I don't get a lot of pecans (I'm probably drinking this a little too chilled
) but the chocolate and nutty flavor more than make up for that. This isn't totally
in my wheelhouse but it's an outstanding beer that (almost) anyone
can appreciate. I'd love to grab another bottle and age it.
