I'll always have a soft spot for Sierra Nevada since their iconic Pale Ale is probably (outside of Samuel Adams Boston Lager) the first craft beer I ever had. Having said that, I don't usually go out of my way to try their beers. No particular reason, they just don't pop to me.
I'm expecting a west coast IPA hop pop (tm Roche) to this seasonal.
Look-Deep, rich amber...like a sunset over the San Francisco Bay.
Smell-Slight hop in the nose. Not as much as I expected.
Taste-The rye is dry and tart on the lips. The hops just accentuates those sensations.
Mouth- Medium to full bodied. DRY. On the lips. In the mouth. The finish. Dry. Dry. Dry.
Overall-For the style, this is top notch and the rye lives up the hype. However, it's not my cup of tea at all. I prefer my beers smoother and less hoppy generally. If you like dry, you'll love this.
About Ruthless Rye:
Ruthless IPA is brewed with this rustic grain for refined flavors – combining the peppery spice of rye and the bright citrusy flavors of whole-cone hops to create a complex ale for the tumultuous transition to Spring.
