BEER OF THE DAY: Firestone Walker Brewing Company, Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout, Paso Robles, CA
Posted Wednesday, June 11th 2014 @ 4pm
If you are beer fan, you know all about Firestone Walker. A friend of mine passed this along to me and I'm excited to give this a shot.
Look- Oil slick black with a ring of foam around the top.
Smell-I think it singed my nose hairs when I sniffed it. That's how roasted the malts are.
Taste-I really want to jump to the aftertaste but I'm a professional so I will say I'm getting a lot of carbonation on the lips.
Mouth-Full bodied. Did I mention the carbonation? I also get hints of roasted malts on my tongue. The finish is dry. The aftertaste is the interesting part for me. It's very smoky...in a way I don't think I've ever tasted before. I don't love it but I like the uniqueness of it.
Overall- I'm just learning to enjoy stouts and oatmeal stouts are proving to be a tough nut for me to crack. I'm sure this is a quality oatmeal stout but it's not lighting the world on fire for me.

A decadent Oatmeal Stout brimming with cocoa and espresso aromas. This beer features a rich, dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavor with a creamy mouth feel and wonderfully dry finish. The addition of U.S. grown fuggles hops contributes the perfect amount of bitterness to this exceptionally balanced beer.
